Our Trip
Our trip to South America lasted 1 month and took us through
Peru, Bolivia and
Brazil. This is quite short compared to the trips of
some of the people we met, who had been traveling for months..
Our
first stop was Lima, Peru where we stayed for just a few hours in the airport.
We took a connecting flight to Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incas. We
stayed there for a few days to get use to the altitude and until Andreas
recovered from "soroche"
which is the altitude sickness. (The best treatment for soroche, is drinking coca
tea !!). During our stay at Cuzco we made arrangements for the Inca Trail, a 4 day walk through the high
mountains of the Andes for the ancient lost city of Machu
Picchu. After the Inca Trail, we rested for 1 day and then took a flight to Puerto
Maldonado, which is the nearest airport to the Posada Amazonas Lodge and
the Tambopata Research
Center. We took a 2 hr boat
trip in the Tambopata River to Posada Amazonas and stayed there for 2 days.
We then took another, 4 hr boat trip to the Tambobata Research Center (TRC)
where we stayed for 4 days. TRC is a research center studying the wildlife of
the Amazon jungle and especially the Macaws. After the jungle
experience, we returned back to Puerto Maldonado by boat and took the return
flight to Cusco.
The next day we took a scenic train ride from
Cuzco to Puno, near
Lake Titikaka, which is
located in the borders of Peru and Bolivia. We took a bus to cross the border to
Bolivia, to end up in the city with the highest airport in the
world, La Paz. We stayed in La Paz for 3 days and then took a flight to Sao
Paolo, Brazil and stayed there for one night. The next day we took an
internal flight to Foz do Iguaçu, in the South Eastern part of Brazil.
We left Foz after 2 days and flew to Rio De Janeiro where we stayed for 5 days
before flying back to New York.
